Curry for the Brain

FEED YOUR BRAIN

A curry may not be the obvious choice to preserve your grey matter, but one of its spices – Turmeric - could be a key ingredient in protecting the brain against Alzheimer’s Disease.

Quite apart from its characteristic spiciness, turmeric has long been valued as a herbal medicine that is known to be liver-protective, and soothing for the digestive tract. It has some anti-biotic properties, too. Its active ingredients are three types of  curcuminoids, which are found in its roots – the part of the plant that’s ground up to produce the seasoning popularly called ‘Curcumin’.

Southampton University’s Dr Amrit Mudher has spotted that that Indian people who eat curcumin regularly appear to be less likely to have Alzheimer's. It is suggested that one of the curcuminoids could be protecting brain cells, but it is not yet known how it works, or indeed if there are other factors to consider.

The Alzheimer’s Society has therefore asked Dr Mudher to investigate further.
